| 1.
Lay a base of thread on your hook. |
| 2.
Tie in a piece of wire, heavy tinsel or thin body braid to be used for
locking in your rabbit strip later in step #7. The material should be
tied in all the way to the back of the hook shank just before the bend.
We used 6 strands of pearl krystal flash for this fly. |
| 3.
Tie in a long piece of Bill's Body Braid or ay other body material
(floss, braids, etc.) The color is your choice. Here we've used black.
Other good colors include white, pearl, olive, etc. This should be
tied in to the point of where your ribbing material was tied in. |
| 4.
Begin to wrap your body material. This should be done evenly and with a
slight growing taper as you move forward towards the eye of the hook. |
| 5.
Tie off your body material when you are approximately 1/8 - 3/16 of an
inch from the eye of the hook. The finished body. Notice the taper.
Clip excess body material close. |
| 6.
Select a nice full piece of rabbit strip. It should be at least 3-6
inches in length (at least one inch longer then the finished fly).
Clip a V shape (a point) on the side of the rabbit strip your going to
tie in. This will aid in tying in the rabbit strip. |
| 7.
The rabbit strip will be tied in at the head of the fly (just behind the
eye of the hook) with the hair facing the rear of the fly. In this
picture we show one wrap as we lock in the rabbit strip. Once a few
turns of thread have been made secure with a few more even wraps to lock
in place. Be careful not to crowd the eye of the hook. |
| 8.
In this step you will stretch the rabbit strip over the top of the hook
shank. Using two hands and manipulating the hair on the rabbit strip
carefully and evenly palmer your ribbing material through the rabbit
strip securing it to the shank of the hook. 5 - 7 turns of the ribbing
material will be enough to secure the rabbit strip. |
| 9.
Tie off your ribbing material and clip close. Secure with a few turns
of thread. |
| 10.
Select a hen feather or schlappen feather in your choice of color. Here
we have used yellow which goes exceptionally well with black and white
(Black Ghost colors). Hold the feather by the tip and carefully pull
the hackle barbs down. Be careful to not strip the barbs off of the
feather. |
| 11.
Tie in the feather by the tip, right at the front of the rabbit strip.
Once secure clip the excess. |
| 12.
Using one hand to wrap the feather use the other hand to fold the
feather backward (view the image to understand fully) as you wrap the
feather forming a nice collar. Each wrap should be just in front of the
previous one. You should begin to wrap your feather just in front of
where you tied in your rabbit strip. |
| 13.
Carefully tie off your feather when the fly is full enough or when you
run out of feather. |
| 14.
Using your non tying hand fold the collar backward and out of the way
while you give the fly a few more even turns of thread until you have
formed a nice head. Whip finish and clip close. Apply head cement. Side view. |
| 15.
Finished fly. |
